The most common problem we solve isn't broken equipment. It's a working system held hostage: an installer who vanished, software locked behind a code nobody wrote down, or a monitoring contract that auto-renewed for the fourth time. You own the building and the hardware bolted to it. A takeover puts you back in control of both, usually without ripping out much of anything.

What Usually Survives a Takeover

More than most owners expect. The expensive parts of a security system are the labor and wiring already in your walls, and those don't care which company's name is on the invoice:

Cameras & Cabling: Most commercial cameras speak open standards and work with a new recorder. The cabling almost always stays.
Door Hardware: Strikes, maglocks, readers, and request-to-exit devices usually outlive the software that ran them.
Alarm Sensors: Door contacts, motion detectors, and glass-breaks typically re-enroll to a new panel without rewiring.
Fire Alarm Devices: Panels can often be re-monitored as-is; device networks stay put. Monitoring is a phone call, not a construction project.

The Installer-Code Hostage Situation

Alarm panels and access control software ship with administrative codes, and some companies treat those codes as leverage: leave us and your system bricks. In practice, nearly every commercial panel can be defaulted, re-programmed, and re-enrolled by a competent technician, and access databases can be rebuilt from a door-by-door audit when the old company won't export them. It takes hours, not weeks, and it does not require their permission. The one thing worth doing first is checking your monitoring contract's end date and cancellation terms, because timing the switch to the renewal window avoids paying two companies at once.

How a Takeover Actually Runs

First visit is an audit: every device documented, wiring condition checked, and a straight verdict on what stays, what goes, and what is worth upgrading while a tech is already on a ladder. Then the switch: panels re-programmed or replaced, monitoring cut over to our UL-listed central station with no coverage gap, and administrative credentials handed to you, documented, in writing. That last part is the point. We win takeovers because the last company held the passwords, and we keep customers by never doing that. Cameras move onto a platform you can see from your phone through remote viewing, and access control lands in a cloud portal your own staff manages.

When Replacement Beats Rescue

Sometimes the honest answer is that the old system isn't worth saving: analog cameras past their useful resolution, a panel line that lost software support years ago, unencrypted fobs a mall kiosk can copy. We say so with numbers, keep-versus-replace priced side by side, and phase the replacement so the building is never unprotected. Aging fobs migrate through key fob entry upgrades, tired camera fleets through security camera installation, and end-of-life panels through burglar alarm replacement, each on its own timeline, not one giant invoice.

Our old security company won't give us the passwords. Is that legal?

It's common, and it's rarely enforceable leverage. You own the hardware on your building; the panel can be defaulted and re-programmed regardless of what the old company shares. Check your service contract for equipment-ownership clauses (leased systems are different), then stop negotiating for something a technician can simply do.

Can you take over our alarm monitoring without changing equipment?

Usually yes. Most panels re-route to a new central station with a programming visit, and older panels that only speak phone-line get a cellular communicator at the same time, which most insurers now prefer anyway. Coverage transfers same-day with no gap.

We have four buildings with four different systems. Can they become one?

That's the classic portfolio takeover: keep each building's field devices, standardize the head-end platforms, and manage everything from one login. It's cheaper than it sounds because the devices, the majority of the historical cost, mostly stay.

How long does a takeover take?

The audit is a day or less per building. The cutover itself typically runs one to three days for alarm and access systems, longer only when cameras or panels are being replaced too. Monitoring switches the day of cutover.

Will our old codes and fobs keep working?

If we keep the panel and readers, yes, existing credentials re-enroll and users never notice the change except that the service calls start getting answered. If credentials are the unencrypted type worth retiring, we phase the swap so nobody gets locked out on a Monday morning.
