Video Intercom Systems

Every buzzer-only intercom asks tenants to make the same bad bet: unlock the building for a voice. A video intercom settles the question the voice can't, who is actually standing at the door, before anything unlocks. For multi-tenant buildings and offices, it's the difference between managing the front door and hoping about it.

How a Modern Video Intercom Works

A visitor finds the unit at the entrance, selects a name or suite from the directory, and the call rings wherever the resident or staff member actually is, a handset, a desk console, or their phone across town. They see live video, talk if they want, and unlock remotely with a tap. The door hardware doing the unlocking is the same electric lock infrastructure as the rest of your door access control, which is why intercoms are best designed as part of the access system rather than bolted beside it.

Multi-Tenant Buildings Are the Home Game

Apartment and condo entries are where video intercoms matter most, and where old hardware fails hardest: paper directories, broken handsets, and the tailgating that follows every buzzed-in delivery. A modern system gives each unit its own video call to a phone, remote unlock residents actually use, and per-unit logs of who buzzed whom in. Tied into tenant room management, credentials and intercom access follow the lease automatically, move-outs stop buzzing the day they should. It's the upgrade with the fastest tenant-satisfaction payoff of anything we install on multi-tenant properties.

Offices, Clinics, and Controlled Lobbies

For commercial buildings the intercom is a reception tool: after-hours deliveries reach a staffed console or an on-call phone instead of a locked door, and visitor entry gets a face attached before the lobby unlocks. Clinics and medical offices use them to keep waiting areas secured while still admitting patients smoothly; the video record of every admitted visitor does double duty for compliance.

Replacing an Old Telephone Entry System

Thousands of buildings still run telephone entry systems wired to landlines that residents no longer have. The upgrade path is gentler than expected: entrance wiring and the door lock usually stay, the panel changes, and the directory moves from paper strips to a screen managed from a browser. For properties that want the full modern stack, facial recognition, mobile credentials, cloud management, our smart video entry platform is the flagship version of everything on this page.

Design Details That Decide Whether People Like It

Intercoms live or die on ergonomics. Camera height and angle that capture a face, not a forehead. Lighting for the entry at night, a video intercom at a dark door is a voice intercom with extra steps. Weather protection on exposed entries. A directory that's searchable instead of scrollable at two hundred units. Loud, clear audio over street noise. None of this is exotic; all of it is the difference between a system residents use and one they prop the door to avoid.

The Intercom Is a Camera Too

Every video intercom is also a doorbell-height camera at your most important entrance, and it should be treated like one: its footage belongs in the same recording and retention plan as the rest of your camera system, and its entry events pair naturally with lobby camera coverage for a complete picture of who entered and what happened next. On cloud-managed systems, intercom logs, door logs, and video live in one place, searchable together, which is exactly what you want the day a question about an entry actually matters.

Common Questions

Can residents answer the intercom from their phones?

Yes, that's the defining feature of modern systems. The entry call rings the resident's phone wherever they are, with live video and remote unlock. A resident can admit a delivery from work, or decline a stranger from the couch, and the building stops depending on anyone being home.

Does a video intercom work with our existing door locks?

Usually. The intercom triggers the same electric strike or maglock your access control already uses, and if the entrance has no electric lock yet, adding one is part of the same install. The audit of your existing entrance hardware comes first.

What happens if the internet goes down at the building?

Local functions, the entrance panel, door release from an on-site console, keep working. Calls to off-site phones need connectivity, which is why buildings that depend on remote answering get a cellular backup path specced from the start.

Can it handle deliveries when no one answers?

Systems support delivery modes: temporary access codes, scheduled delivery windows, or routing unanswered entry calls to a manager or front desk. Which fits depends on your building's package volume and staffing, part of the design conversation.

Is there a record of who was admitted?

Every call and unlock logs with a timestamp and, on video systems, a face. For disputes, incidents, or a landlord's duty-of-care questions, that log answers in seconds what a buzzer system leaves permanently unknowable.

I knew when I called and had a conversation with Donna that they would be a good fit to do business with. Donna and Zach was very friendly and responsive. I was switching from a different company and im so glad that I did. Zach came and installed a new security system for my business and was able to switch over my fire panel to meet county standards to stay in compliance. Zach was also able to switch my camera system to monitor. The transition process was smooth. Thank yall for helping us out at Brighter Minds Academy 2
