Cloud Access Control

Somewhere in your building there may be a computer nobody dares to touch, because it runs the door system, and the person who set it up is long gone. Cloud access control retires that machine. The doors, credentials, and schedules live in a hosted platform you reach from a browser, updated and backed up without anyone remembering to do it.

Cloud vs On-Prem, Honestly

Cloud isn't automatically the right answer, it's a trade, and it helps to see it plainly. Cloud gives you administration from anywhere, automatic software updates, off-site backup of your configuration, and no server hardware to maintain or forget. In exchange you take on a subscription and a dependence on the vendor's platform staying good. On-prem gives you a one-time purchase and full local control, in exchange for owning the maintenance, the updates, the backups, and the risk that the software ages out with the machine it lives on.

For most multi-site operators and for any property without an IT staff, cloud wins that trade. For a single large facility with dedicated IT and strict data-locality rules, on-prem can still be the right call. We install and service both, so the recommendation you get is based on your building, not on what we're able to sell.

What Changes Day to Day

The difference shows up in the ordinary moments of running a property:

  • Instant Credential Changes: A move-out at 5 p.m. Friday is a browser click from home, not a Monday site visit.

  • Portfolio Administration: Every building and door in the portfolio in one dashboard, with per-site permissions for local staff.

  • No Update Debt: Firmware and features update automatically, the platform you buy improves instead of aging.

  • Audit Trail Anywhere: Entry logs searchable from anywhere, exportable when an incident or dispute needs a record.

What Happens When the Internet Drops

The first question everyone asks, and the answer is: the doors keep working. Door controllers cache credentials and schedules locally, so reads, unlocks, and logging continue through an outage; the system syncs back up when the connection returns. What you lose during the outage is remote administration, not door function. It's the same resilience logic we apply to cameras and alarm communication, local operation first, cloud as the management layer on top.

Moving an Existing System to the Cloud

If your doors already have readers and electric locks, a cloud migration is usually a controller and software change, not a rip-out, the same retrofit logic covered on our keyless entry page. We audit the existing door hardware first, reuse what's sound, and cut over door by door so access never goes down mid-transition. Systems locked behind a previous installer's codes get freed through our repair and takeover service as part of the same project.

Access and Cameras on the Same Cloud

The management-from-anywhere logic extends past the doors. Pair cloud access control with remote camera viewing and a denied credential or forced door arrives as an alert with the clip attached, viewable from the same phone you'd revoke the credential with. Amenity spaces tie in through tenant room management, and the front door joins through smart video entry, so the whole property runs from one login rather than four apps that don't know about each other.

Who Gets the Most Out of It

Cloud access control earns its subscription fastest where administration is the pain point:

Installed and Serviced Locally

The platform is cloud; the doors are physical, and they're here. We install, configure, and service cloud access control across our North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia service areas, so when a reader fails, the fix is a local technician, not a support ticket to a company with no trucks.

Common Questions

Do the doors stop working if the internet goes down?

No. Controllers store credentials and schedules locally and keep running through an outage, including logging. You temporarily lose remote administration, not door function, and everything syncs when the connection returns.

Is cloud access control secure enough for commercial use?

Reputable platforms encrypt traffic between controllers and the cloud and are patched continuously, which in practice makes them harder to compromise than a forgotten on-prem server running years-old software. The honest risk comparison usually favors the platform that's actually maintained.

What does the subscription actually pay for?

Hosting, continuous updates, backups, and the administration platform itself. The trade is a predictable monthly cost instead of a large refresh bill every several years when an on-prem server and its software age out together.

Can I keep my existing fobs and cards?

Usually, yes. If the existing readers use a supported format, credentials carry over; where they don't, we stage reissue during the rollout so nobody loses access. The hardware audit before the project answers this definitively.

Can cloud access control run my gates and elevators too?

Yes, gates, garage doors, and elevator floor control ride the same platform and permissions as regular door access control, which is most useful on multi-building and multi-tenant properties.

I knew when I called and had a conversation with Donna that they would be a good fit to do business with. Donna and Zach was very friendly and responsive. I was switching from a different company and im so glad that I did. Zach came and installed a new security system for my business and was able to switch over my fire panel to meet county standards to stay in compliance. Zach was also able to switch my camera system to monitor. The transition process was smooth. Thank yall for helping us out at Brighter Minds Academy 2

Zach, John and Omar have been simply amazing. We had a difficult fight getting our business off the ground and Security & Life helped us in every way they could. They’ve been outstanding in every way. They designed and installed dozens of cameras, ethernet ports and access control systems correctly the first time, they always answer immediately when we call and any issue we have is resolved almost immediately. We will never work with anyone else for security, fire or low voltage because you simply cannot improve on perfection.
