Commercial Alarm Monitoring Company

Most commercial buildings end up with two monitoring accounts, one for the burglar panel and one for fire, often with two companies, two invoices, and two call lists that disagree. We run both through one UL-listed central station, with operators who verify, dispatch, and follow up around the clock. That covers burglar, fire, panic, and environmental signals across NC, SC, and GA, including systems other companies installed.

Why Burglar and Fire Belong on One Account

Splitting monitoring across vendors feels harmless until a signal needs a decision. One account means one call list, one portal, one set of passcodes, and one place to look when the city sends a false-alarm notice. Fire signals still jump the queue, and we keep the two signal types separate in handling, but the paperwork and contact list stay in one file. You can read how we handle the fire side in detail, and how we design the intrusion side on our burglar alarm page. For businesses that want both designed together, see commercial security systems.

The First Two Minutes After a Signal

Monitoring is easier to judge when you know what should happen. Here is the sequence for a commercial burglar alarm:

  • 0 to 10 seconds: The panel sends the signal over cellular, IP, or both. Dual-path communicators try the second path automatically if the first fails.

  • 10 to 45 seconds: An operator sees the account, the zone, and your call list. Fire and panic signals jump ahead of burglary.

  • 45 to 90 seconds: Verification: a call to the premises, a check of linked camera clips, and a call to the first contact. Fire signals are dispatched first and verified second.

  • Under 2 minutes: Dispatch to the right police or fire agency with address, alarm type, and verification notes, then calls down your list.

  • Afterward: A signal log with timestamps for every step, available in the portal and used in false-alarm disputes with the city.

UL-Listed Central Station, Not an Answering Service

The phrase 24/7 monitoring gets used for everything from a UL-listed central station to a push notification. The difference matters when an insurer or fire marshal asks. A UL-listed station meets standards for staffing, redundant power and communications, and response times, and it issues the certificates that many North Carolina AHJs require for fire systems. Ours runs through redundant facilities, so a storm or outage at one center rolls to another without a gap. App alerts come included, but they ride on top of the operator, not instead of one.

How the Signal Leaves the Building

The communicator is the weak point in most older systems. Phone-line dialers still exist in many buildings, and copper lines are being retired across the Carolinas. We install dual-path communicators that send over LTE cellular and your internet connection, with each path supervising the other. For fire systems, NFPA 72 requires the path to be tested and any failure reported within a set window, and the central station handles that automatically. If your building still dials out over a phone line, replacing the communicator is usually the best monitoring upgrade available.

What We Monitor

One account, one call list, one portal, regardless of how many systems or buildings are behind it:

  • Fire Alarm: Alarm, supervisory, and trouble signals with UL certificates for the AHJ.

  • Burglar Alarm: Intrusion, glass break, and after-hours entry with call verification and police dispatch.

  • Panic and Duress: Silent holdup and duress signals from fixed buttons and wearable pendants, dispatched without a callback.

  • Environmental: Low temperature in sprinkler rooms, water in server rooms, and power loss at coolers and freezers.

  • Video Verification: Alarm-triggered camera clips reviewed by the operator before dispatch, cutting false dispatches.

  • Access Control Events: Forced doors, doors held open, and after-hours entries from your access control system.

What Commercial Monitoring Costs

Commercial monitoring is priced per communicator, per month. Burglar alarm monitoring over a dual-path communicator runs $35 to $60 a month. Fire signal monitoring runs $45 to $95 a month because of the certificate, supervised path testing, and priority handling. Video verification adds $10 to $25 a month depending on camera count. The communicator hardware is a one-time $400 to $1,400 installed, and it is the only equipment most takeovers need. We do not require long contracts, and the price on the quote is the price on the invoice.

Switching Commercial Alarm Monitoring Companies

Most of our accounts started with a system another company installed, so switching is routine. A few steps decide whether it goes cleanly. For the full process, see system takeovers, and if you are leaving a contract with a national provider, read switching commercial security providers.

  • Read the Contract: Check the term, the auto-renew clause, the notice window, and any early termination language before you do anything.

  • Get the Codes: Ask for the account number and the panel installer code. If the old company locked the panel, we recover the code or replace the panel and keep the sensors.

  • Match the Communicator: Many communicators are tied to one company's receiver. We swap or reprogram it to ours.

  • Test Before You Cancel: We test every zone to the new central station first. Cancel in writing only after the first successful test.

  • Move the Fire Certificate: The AHJ needs a certificate from the new station. We issue it so the fire marshal's file stays current.

Who Relies on It

Monitoring turns an alarm into a response. It matters most where nobody is on site overnight: warehouses, retail shops, office buildings, and gas stations and convenience stores. It matters for a different reason in assisted living and schools, where the fire signal has to reach the department in seconds. Our fire alarm work is led by a NICET Level III certified technician and runs under North Carolina license SP.FA/LV.36697.

Monitoring Questions

Is central station monitoring required for a commercial fire alarm?

In nearly every occupancy that requires a fire alarm, yes. NFPA 72 and state codes require a supervising station connection for most commercial alarms, and the fire marshal will ask for the certificate. See fire alarm monitoring.

What happens if the internet goes down?

A dual-path communicator switches to cellular and reports the IP failure as a trouble signal. If both paths fail, the central station flags the account as not communicating and calls you.

Can you monitor a system you did not install?

Yes, and it describes most of our accounts. The communicator is reprogrammed or replaced and the rest stays. See system takeovers.

How do you reduce false alarms and fines?

Call verification before dispatch, video verification where cameras exist, correct entry delays, and a report after each false alarm. Our intrusion detection designs start with prevention.

Do I need a separate account for each building?

No. Multi-site customers get one master account with a call list per location, one portal, and one invoice.
