Commercial Fire Alarm Systems

A commercial fire alarm system is a code-required detection and notification network, sized to the occupancy under NFPA 72 and the North Carolina, South Carolina, or Georgia fire code. It detects smoke or heat, sounds horns and strobes so occupants leave, supervises the sprinkler system through flow and tamper switches, and sends the signal to a monitored central station so the fire department is rolling before anyone finds a phone. Every piece of that chain is tested on a schedule, and every test is documented. We handle all of it from three NC offices, from new installation to the annual test to the 2 a.m. trouble call.

The visit starts at the panel. We put the system in test with the central station, verify the batteries under load, and read every stored trouble event since the last visit, which tells us about intermittent faults nobody reported. Then it is device by device: functional smoke on every detector, a magnet or heat gun on the heats, every pull station pulled and reset, every strobe checked for flash in every room, and every waterflow switch tripped from the inspector's test connection so the alarm travels all the way to the monitoring center. Anything that fails gets fixed on the spot if we have the part on the truck, which is why our trucks carry common detectors, bases, and strobes. Before we leave, the report is complete: every device, its result, and any deficiencies with a quote. A panel from the mid-2000s is often past the point where its manufacturer supports it, and the first sign is usually a repair quote that includes the words "if we can find the part." We tell you where a system sits: supportable, on its last parts, or done. A conventional panel in a building that has grown usually needs an addressable replacement, and the good news is that most of the existing wiring stays. A panel that is supportable but neglected gets a repair and a clean inspection cycle.
