Access Control Repair & Maintenance

A card reader that stopped reading, a door that won't latch at night, a controller that dropped off the network over the weekend. We repair and maintain commercial access control and telephone entry systems across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, including systems another company installed and then walked away from.

What Usually Breaks

Most access control service calls come down to a short list of problems. When we know the symptom before we arrive, the right part is usually already on the truck:

  • Reader Not Reading: Dead reader, flashing red on every badge, or one fob that works and the rest don't. It's usually a failed reader, a damaged cable, or a credential format mismatch after someone added new fobs.

  • Door Won't Lock or Latch: Worn electric strikes, maglocks out of alignment, or a door closer that no longer pulls the door shut. That's the failure that leaves a building open overnight.

  • Door Won't Release: Failed request-to-exit sensors, a stuck strike, or a fire alarm release that never reset. People get locked in or locked out, and that one gets our fastest response.

  • Controller Offline: Doors stop taking changes, or the software shows them offline. Common causes are a network change, a dead controller battery, or a failed power supply.

  • Power Supply and Battery Failure: Access control power supplies and backup batteries wear out on a schedule. A tired battery is why doors misbehave during a storm or a brief power blip.

  • Telephone Entry and Intercom: Call boxes that ring the wrong unit, won't dial out after a phone line change, or have a cracked keypad from the weather.

How an Access Control Repair Call Works

Call or send the request and tell us what the door is doing. For many systems we can look at the controller remotely before anyone drives out, which sometimes fixes the problem outright and otherwise tells the tech what to bring. Emergencies, like a door stuck unlocked or people unable to get out, get a same-day response for customers on a service plan. Most other repairs are handled the next business day from the nearest office in Charlotte, Raleigh, or Greensboro.

On site, the tech tests the door end to end: reader, lock, door position switch, request-to-exit, and the fire alarm release where the door is fail-safe. You get a written summary of what failed, what was replaced, and anything else that looks close to failing, so the next repair doesn't come as a surprise.

What Access Control Repair Costs

Most single-door repairs, such as a reader, an electric strike, a request-to-exit sensor, or a power supply, come in between $250 and $900 including parts and labor. Controller replacements and software migrations cost more, and we quote them before starting. When a system is old enough that parts are hard to find, we'll say so, and price a phased upgrade next to the repair so you can compare the two. The upgrade side is covered on our commercial access control page.

Access Control Maintenance Plans

A maintenance plan puts every door on an annual visit: test the lock and the reader, check the door closer and hardware alignment, load-test the backup batteries, update controller firmware, and walk the credential list with you to remove badges for people who've left. Doors that release with the fire alarm get tested on the same day as the fire alarm inspection, since the fire marshal checks both.

Plan customers get priority dispatch and the same-day emergency response above. For apartment communities and HOAs with gates, call boxes, and amenity doors, the plan also covers the gate access hardware that takes the most weather and the most abuse.

Systems Another Company Installed

A lot of our repair calls are for systems whose original installer went out of business, stopped answering, or wants to replace everything rather than fix one door. We work on those systems as they are. If the software is locked to the old vendor, we get the account transferred or move the doors onto a platform you control. Our system takeover process covers the handoff, and the same team handles security camera repairs if the cameras came from the same vendor.

Access Control Repair Questions

Do you repair access control systems you didn't install?

Yes. Most of our repair work is on systems another company installed, including the brands listed above. When the software is locked to a previous vendor, we help transfer the account or move the doors to a platform you control. See our takeover service for details.

How fast can you get someone out for an access control repair?

Same day for emergencies on service-plan accounts, such as a door stuck unlocked or people locked in. Most other repairs are handled the next business day. Remote diagnosis often narrows the problem before a tech arrives.

Why does my card reader flash red for some badges but not others?

Usually the credentials don't match the reader. That can mean a different card format, a batch of fobs that was never enrolled, or cards that expired in the software. Sometimes it's a reader failing. We check the reader and the database on the same visit. Our key fob entry page explains credential formats in more detail.

Should I repair my access control system or replace it?

Repair it if parts are available and the software is still supported. Replace it when controllers are discontinued, the software won't run on a current computer, or you're paying for the same door every few months. We'll price both options side by side so the decision is easy.

Do you offer access control maintenance contracts?

Yes. Maintenance plans include an annual visit to every door, battery testing, firmware updates, a credential cleanup, and priority dispatch. They're common for apartment communities, HOAs, medical offices, and multi-site businesses.

I knew when I called and had a conversation with Donna that they would be a good fit to do business with. Donna and Zach was very friendly and responsive. I was switching from a different company and im so glad that I did. Zach came and installed a new security system for my business and was able to switch over my fire panel to meet county standards to stay in compliance. Zach was also able to switch my camera system to monitor. The transition process was smooth. Thank yall for helping us out at Brighter Minds Academy 2
