Game-Day Weekends Are the Real Stress Test

A downtown Athens restaurant on a football Saturday can have more people inside than it holds on any other day of the year, and a fire alarm that has been quietly failing is the thing nobody notices until then. Dead batteries, a smoke detector that was painted over, a kitchen hood system whose last inspection tag is two years old: these are the problems we find when an owner finally calls.

We start with a full walk-through of the existing system, test every device, and give you a written list of what is failing and why. For restaurants that includes the hood suppression system, because the fire alarm and the kitchen suppression system have to talk to each other and be tested together. Our restaurant security page covers the rest of what a food-service operation needs.

Student and Off-Campus Housing

Athens is a university town, and a large share of its multifamily buildings are leased to students on twelve-month terms that all roll over in the same few weeks each summer. That creates a specific security problem: hundreds of lost fobs, roommates who moved out but never returned a credential, and visitors who follow residents through a door. Cloud-managed key fob entry lets property managers add and remove credentials in minutes instead of rekeying locks, and each fob can carry a time window that ends with the lease.

On the fire side, mid-rise and garden-style apartment buildings require annual testing and, in many cases, monitored systems. We handle both, along with panel replacement when a decade-old panel can no longer get parts. See our guides for multi-tenant housing and tenant room management.

Retail, Offices, and Medical Along Atlanta Highway and Epps Bridge

The commercial corridors on the west and east sides of Athens are mostly strip retail, medical offices, and small professional buildings, with a mix of newer and 1980s construction. Burglaries in those buildings tend to happen after hours, through back doors and rear windows. A door contact on the rear entrance, motion sensors tied to a central station, and a camera covering the delivery area stop most of it.

Cameras for retail: Entrance, register, stockroom, and rear-lot coverage
Medical office entry: Front-office door control and panic buttons
Burglary alarms: Door contacts, motion, glass break, central station
Camera repair: Offline cameras and failed recorders

How Fire Alarm Work Is Handled in Athens-Clarke County

Our fire alarm technician team includes NICET Level III certified staff. Georgia fire alarm work answers to the Georgia Safety Fire Commissioner's rules and to the local fire marshal, so each project follows that jurisdiction's plan review, permit, and acceptance-test steps. In Athens, plans and permits for new or modified fire alarm work go through the local fire marshal's office, and the final acceptance test is witnessed on site.

We cover installation from drawings, annual NFPA 72 inspection and testing, ongoing maintenance, and monitoring. If your sprinkler system is due for inspection, we also handle sprinkler inspection and backflow testing, so one vendor answers for both.

Taking Over a System Nobody Documented

Athens has plenty of buildings where the person who installed the security or fire alarm system is long gone, the panel code is in someone's head, and the last report is a sticker on the door. We start a takeover by building the paperwork that should have existed: a device list with locations, a map of door and camera positions, panel programming backed up, and a list of anything that is out of date or out of spec.

From there you have a real choice. Sometimes the right call is a few new devices and a service plan. Sometimes the panel is at end of life and replacement is cheaper than another year of repairs. We tell you which it is, in writing, before you spend money. Churches and small schools around town often land in this category, and our religious buildings page and educational facilities page describe how we approach them.
