Fire Alarm and Security for Daycare and Childcare Centers

Parents judge a daycare by two doors: the one they walk through at drop-off and the one the fire marshal tests once a year. Both have to work every day. We install and service fire alarm systems, controlled entry, cameras, and panic buttons for daycares and childcare centers across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, including centers that share a building with a church or a strip center. The calls we get usually start with a failed inspection, a licensing visit, or a director who wants to know who is at the door before opening it. Our fire alarm work is done by NICET Level III certified technicians under NC license SP.FA/LV.36697, which covers North Carolina only.

Fire Alarm Basics for a Childcare Building

Whether a childcare facility needs a fire alarm system, and which devices, depends on its occupancy classification, the ages of the children, the occupant load, and the building's sprinkler status. The fire marshal and the plans reviewer make that call, not us, and the answer can change when a center adds a classroom or an infant room. What most centers end up with is a commercial fire alarm system: manual pull stations at exits, smoke detection in corridors, sleeping areas, and mechanical rooms, horn-strobes that cover every classroom, and a monitoring connection that calls the fire department. A single-story center with a dozen classrooms often falls into the 15 to 40 device tier for testing.

Pull Stations, Strobes, and Smoke Detection

The devices a fire marshal looks at on a daycare walkthrough, in the order they usually check them:

  • Pull stations at exits: Mounted at the required height near every exit, and not blocked by coat racks or cubbies.

  • Horn-strobes in every room: Audible and visible alert in classrooms, restrooms, kitchens, and corridors, tested for coverage.

  • Smoke detection: Detectors in corridors, nap rooms, storage, and the mechanical closet, kept clean of dust and paint.

  • Fire extinguishers: Tagged, mounted, and the right class for the kitchen and the office.

  • Monitoring: A dual-path communicator so a signal reaches the fire department when the building is empty.

  • Written records: The inspection report the licensing consultant and the fire marshal both ask for.

How Often Daycare Fire Systems Get Inspected

Fire alarm systems are tested annually under NFPA 72, and sprinkler systems follow the quarterly, annual, and five-year schedule in NFPA 25. In North Carolina, childcare centers are also visited by the local fire marshal and the state licensing process, commonly once a year, and the inspector asks to see current testing records before they test anything. We keep that cadence on a calendar for each client and send reminders before the dates. Extinguishers get their annual service on the same visit. Our inspection and testing page explains what each test covers. A failed item is repaired and re-tested so the report ends up clean.

Door Control and Visitor Entry

Controlled entry is how a center answers the question parents ask first. The front door stays locked, a video intercom at the door shows the visitor to the front desk, and the director releases the lock from the desk or a phone. Staff use key fobs or mobile credentials, with individual codes so a departing teacher's access ends the same day. Parents can be issued drop-off credentials with a schedule, though many centers choose visitor release only. One rule is not negotiable: every locked door still has to open freely from inside for egress, and electric locks on exit paths release when the fire alarm sounds.

Cameras in Common Areas

Cameras in a childcare center serve parents, directors, and insurers, and they raise privacy questions that deserve plain answers. We place them in common areas: entry, hallways, playground, parking lot, and the pickup lane. Cameras do not belong in restrooms, diaper-changing areas, or anywhere a child changes clothes. Retention is typically 30 days and set by the center's written policy. Directors can view the cameras from a phone, and some centers offer parents a live classroom view, which is a separate service with its own consent steps. See our security camera installation page for how we scope a system.

Panic Buttons for the Front Desk and Director

A daycare front desk is a single person with a door buzzer and a line out the door at pickup. A silent panic button at the desk, in the director's office, and on a pendant for the outdoor staff routes to a monitoring center that calls and dispatches. The signal can also trigger a lockdown procedure on the door system for centers that have written one. Panic alarms matter most for the disputes that no one plans for: a custody conflict at the door, an agitated visitor, or an intruder in the lot. Training the staff on what the button does and what it does not do takes ten minutes and is worth the time.

What Daycare Systems Cost

A small childcare center with 15 to 40 fire alarm devices typically pays $375 to $800 a year for the annual NFPA 72 test and report, plus $45 to $95 a month for monitoring. Controlled entry at the front door, with intercom, reader, and strike, runs $1,500 to $3,500 per door, and a six to eight camera common-area system runs roughly $7,000 to $14,000 installed. New fire alarm installation depends on square footage and whether the building is sprinklered, and we price it from the floor plan and the fire marshal's requirements. Centers in leased space should check the lease before work begins, since the landlord may own the alarm panel.

Where We Work and Who Calls

Typical triggers are a failed fire inspection, a new-location build-out, or an upcoming licensing visit, and the buyers are directors, church ministries, and franchise owners. We serve the Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro areas in North Carolina, plus Upstate and Midlands South Carolina and Georgia. For church-based programs, see our religious building security page, and for schools see educational facilities. Full coverage is on the service areas map.

Daycare Fire and Safety Questions

How often does a daycare fire alarm need to be tested?

Annually under NFPA 72, with the written report kept on site. The fire marshal and state licensing visits commonly run yearly and ask for it. Details are on our inspection page.

Can a daycare lock its doors during the day?

Yes, on the entry side, as long as every exit still opens freely from inside without a key or special knowledge. Electric locks on exit paths release when the fire alarm goes off. The AHJ reviews the lock hardware on the door.

Do you need a fire alarm if the building has sprinklers?

Often yes, since sprinklers and alarms do different jobs, but the requirement depends on occupancy, size, and the adopted code. The fire marshal or plans reviewer decides. We start with their requirements and design to that.

Where can cameras go in a childcare center?

Entry, halls, playground, parking lot, and the pickup lane. Not in restrooms, changing areas, or anywhere a child changes clothes. Classroom cameras are a policy decision for the director and the owner, and they need written parent notice.

What does it cost to get a daycare inspection-ready?

Testing and a report for a small center is $375 to $800. Repairs depend on what the test finds. Request a walkthrough through the contact form and we will tell you what the marshal is likely to flag before they arrive.
