Fire Pump Testing & Inspection

If your building has a fire pump, everything downstream depends on it: the sprinkler system is designed around the pressure that pump delivers, and a pump that fails to start makes every head in the building decorative. NFPA 25 takes that seriously, with a testing schedule stricter than any other component's. We run that schedule, weekly to annual, and document every run.

Schedule Pump Testing

The Schedule: Weekly, Monthly, Annual

Fire pumps get exercised more often than anything else in the building because they sit idle for years and then have to perform instantly:

  • Weekly / Monthly Churn Tests: The pump runs without flowing water: diesel pumps weekly, electric pumps monthly under current code. Start pressure, run time, and readings logged every run.

  • Annual Flow Test: The real exam: water actually flows at 100% and 150% of rated capacity, and the pump either makes its curve or it doesn't. No churn test can substitute.

  • Everything Around the Pump: Controller, transfer switch, batteries, fuel, packing glands, relief valves, and the jockey pump that quietly hides failing pressure between tests.

What Churn Tests Miss and Flow Tests Catch

A pump can pass a hundred churn tests and still fail its flow test, because churn proves the driver starts, not that the pump moves water against real demand. Impellers wear, suction supplies degrade, and valves creep partially closed, all invisible until water actually flows. The annual test plots the pump's performance curve against its rating, and a degrading curve is your early warning years before failure. That trend line is also what a buyer's engineer or insurer wants to see on any building with a pump, alongside the sprinkler inspection records the pump supports.

One Calendar With the Rest of the Fire System

The pump test rides the same schedule as everything else we maintain: fire alarm testing, sprinkler inspections including the five-year internals, and the backflow preventer test, one calendar, one set of records, one vendor to call. Pump rooms also fail inspections for mundane reasons, dead heaters, missing signage, storage piled against the controller, and our reports flag those before the fire marshal does. Supervisory signals from the pump controller, phase loss, pump running, low fuel, route to your monitored fire alarm panel, so a 2 a.m. pump start never goes unnoticed.

Buildings That Carry Pumps

Any building where street pressure can't feed the highest or farthest head needs a pump, which in practice means:

Fire Pump Questions

How often does a fire pump need to be tested?

Churn tests weekly for diesel pumps and monthly for electric pumps under current NFPA 25, plus a full annual flow test. Some jurisdictions and insurers still expect weekly runs on electric pumps; we set the cadence to the stricter of what your AHJ and carrier require.

Who is allowed to run the weekly churn test?

Trained building staff can run and log churn tests, and plenty of our customers do, with us handling the monthly or quarterly verification and the annual flow test. Just as common: nobody on staff wants to touch it, and we run the whole schedule. Either way the log has to exist, because it's the first thing an inspector asks for.

What does an annual fire pump flow test cost?

Most single-pump commercial buildings land in the $800 to $2,000 range depending on pump size and test setup, hose streams versus a test header versus a flow meter. Deficiencies found get quoted separately with a straight read on urgency.

Our pump room failed inspection. What are the usual culprits?

In rough order: no test records, a dead pump room heater (a freeze risk the code cares about), batteries past their date on the diesel driver, storage crowding the equipment, and a jockey pump that's been masking a system leak. All fixable, most cheaply. The records problem is the one that follows you, so start the log now.

Can you test a pump another company installed or previously serviced?

Yes. NFPA schedules attach to the equipment, not the installer. We baseline the pump on our first visit, flag anything undocumented, and take the calendar from there, the same way our takeover process works for the rest of the building's systems.

I was switching from a different company and im so glad that I did. Zach came and installed a new security system for my business and was able to switch over my fire panel to meet county standards to stay in compliance. Zach was also able to switch my camera system to monitor. The transition process was smooth. Thank yall for helping us out at Brighter Minds Academy 2
