The Anatomy of a Controlled Door

The Reader: Card, fob, PIN, mobile, or biometric, the device that answers "who is asking."
The Lock: Electric strike or magnetic lock, chosen per door based on frame, traffic, and fire code.
Request-to-Exit: Motion sensor or push bar that unlocks the way out, so egress never depends on a credential.

Strikes, Maglocks, and What Fire Code Says

Electric strikes keep the mechanical latch and release it on a valid read, which makes them the default for most interior doors. Magnetic locks hold with constant power and no moving parts, useful on glass doors and high-traffic entries, but they demand careful egress design: code generally requires them to release on fire alarm activation and on request-to-exit, without exception. Whether each door should fail locked or fail open is a code decision made door by door, the same fail-safe versus fail-secure logic we apply on keyless entry projects.

When the Door Knows It's Open

Position monitoring is the piece most bare-bones installs skip, and the one property managers end up wishing for. With it, the system distinguishes a normal entry from a door held open past its allowed time, a forced door with no credential read, and a door quietly propped with a rock at the loading dock, and each condition can alert differently. Common Questions

Can you add access control to a door without replacing the door?

Almost always. Strikes fit most existing frames, maglocks mount to the frame face, and glass storefront doors have purpose-made hardware. The survey tells us which lock type fits each opening; full door replacement is rare and we'll say so up front when it's genuinely needed.

What happens to controlled doors during a power outage?

Each door behaves the way it was specified: fail-secure doors stay locked, fail-safe doors release, and controllers run on battery backup so credentials and logging continue through the outage. Egress hardware works mechanically regardless, leaving the building never depends on power. The rules for which door gets which behavior come from fire code, not preference, as covered on our keyless entry page.

Does every door need its own controller?

No, controllers typically manage multiple doors, and buildings are designed around controller locations to keep wiring runs short. What every door does need is its own lock, reader, and position switch; sharing those between doors is where cut-rate installs go wrong.

Can door access control work with cameras and alarms?

How long does a door access control install take?
