Historic Buildings Fight Back, and That Shapes the Job

Most of downtown Savannah was built long before anyone planned for cable. Thick masonry walls, plaster ceilings, and tabby or brick that cannot be drilled casually mean the first question on a Historic District job is how the wire gets from point A to point B without damaging the building. Exterior changes inside the district also go through the city's review process, so a camera bracket or a reader on a street-facing wall is a conversation before it is an install.

We plan around that. Surface raceway painted to match, runs through existing chases, and devices placed under eaves or inside vestibules keep the street face of the building intact. For a restaurant, shop, or office on one of the squares, that usually means fewer, better-placed security cameras rather than a camera on every corner. If you are weighing an upgrade on an older building, we will walk it with you and mark where the wire can realistically go.

Port-Area Warehouses and Truck Yards

Savannah's economy runs through the Port of Savannah, and the warehouses and distribution buildings around Garden City, Pooler, and the I-95 and I-16 corridors have their own security problems. Large yards, long fence lines, trailers parked overnight, and dock doors that get used at all hours all call for cameras that can read a plate or a trailer number at a distance, not just show a shape in the dark.

A typical build here is pole-mounted cameras covering the gate and the yard, dock-door cameras inside, and access control on the office and any cage or high-value area. If a gate controls truck traffic, we pair a call box with license plate recognition and gate access. Our warehouse and distribution page goes deeper on retention, lighting, and coverage planning.

What Salt Air and Humidity Do to Equipment

Coastal Georgia is hard on low-voltage hardware. Salt air corrodes unprotected terminations, humidity gets into poorly sealed junction boxes, and summer afternoon heat inside an unconditioned equipment closet shortens the life of recorders and power supplies. We specify marine-grade or sealed fittings on exterior runs, drip loops, and ventilated or conditioned enclosures, and we label everything so the next technician can find a fault in minutes.

If you already have cameras that fog up, readers that glitch after every storm, or a recorder that reboots on hot days, those are usually installation problems, not bad luck. We troubleshoot them as part of our camera and access control repair work, and we say plainly when a fix is a new enclosure rather than a new system.

  • Camera repair: Offline cameras, failed recording, fogged domes

  • Access control repair: Readers, strikes, and door hardware that stopped working

  • Fire alarm repair: Trouble signals, ground faults, and failed devices

  • System takeover: We assume a system left behind by another vendor

Fire Alarm Work in Savannah

Our fire alarm technician team includes NICET Level III certified staff. Georgia fire alarm work answers to the Georgia Safety Fire Commissioner's rules and to the local fire marshal, so each project follows that jurisdiction's plan review, permit, and acceptance-test steps. Savannah's fire marshal's office and Chatham County reviewers have their own submittal expectations, so we work from your drawings, prepare shop drawings and battery calculations, and handle the permit and the acceptance test with the inspector present.

Savannah buildings bring a few recurring situations. Older hotels and inns that need panels replaced without taking rooms out of service. Restaurants with kitchen hoods that need coordinated suppression system inspection. Multi-story mixed-use buildings where a retail tenant change forces a fire alarm modification. For each, we cover installation, annual NFPA 72 inspection and testing, panel replacement, and monitoring. Hospitality is a market we want more of, and our hotel and hospitality page lays out how we would approach a property.

What Savannah Projects Typically Cost

Costs depend on the building, the wire path, and how much has to be coordinated with other trades. These are typical ranges, not quotes.

  • Small camera system: 4 to 8 cameras with recorder and remote viewing: $3,500 to $9,000, higher on masonry buildings where wire runs are difficult.

  • Mid-size camera system: 16 or more cameras on a warehouse, hotel, or multi-tenant building: $12,000 to $30,000.

  • Access control: $1,500 to $3,500 per door installed, depending on door type, hardware, and cloud or on-site management.

  • Gate call box with LPR: $8,000 to $10,000 is typical; $6,000 to $15,000 covers the realistic range.

  • Annual fire alarm test: $350 to $800 for 15 to 40 devices; $1,000 to $3,200 for 100 to 300 devices.

Where We Fit in the Coastal Georgia Market

Savannah is our main coastal Georgia market, and the same team serves Augusta, Macon, and Atlanta, with the full list on our Georgia service area page. Property managers with buildings in several of those cities get one point of contact and consistent documentation. If you manage multifamily property, see our work on multi-tenant housing and HOA communities, which covers the gated neighborhoods in Pooler, Richmond Hill, and the islands.

Savannah Security & Fire Alarm FAQs

Do you work in the Savannah Historic District?

Yes. We plan around masonry, plaster, and the city's exterior review process, using surface raceway, existing chases, and carefully placed devices. Start with a walkthrough so we can mark realistic wire paths. See our video surveillance page for camera options.

What do cameras for a port-area warehouse cost?

A mid-size system of 16 or more cameras with a recorder typically runs $12,000 to $30,000. Yard coverage, pole mounts, and long cable runs move the number. The warehouse security page explains the tradeoffs.

Who regulates fire alarm work in Savannah?

Fire alarm installation and testing in Georgia fall under the Georgia Safety Fire Commissioner's rules and the local fire marshal. We prepare submittals, permits, and the acceptance test to match what that office asks for.

Can you take over a system another company installed?

Usually, yes. We audit the equipment, document what is there, and tell you whether to keep it, repair it, or replace it. Our camera repair page and fire alarm repair page describe the process.

Do you install and monitor fire alarms for hotels or inns?

We install, test, and monitor fire alarm systems for hospitality properties and we sequence the work so rooms stay in service where possible. Hospitality is a market we are actively building in.
